Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to rent a car in the UK without a Credit card?

Re: can you pay in cash?
Hi ,
It is possible, but not necessarily with all suppliers. You can pay by debit card with quite a few suppliers, but this is not the preferred method. It may even be possible to settle your final bill in cash (again you would have to check with individual suppiers), but you would definitely require a credit card or possibly a debit card to collect the car. The reason that a credit or debit card is required is in case there is any damage to the vehicle - the details are held so tha the money can be claimed if so.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Debbie

Re: can you pay in cash?
Hi Debbie, thanks for your reply. the thing is, I don't have a credit card and I would rather not leave my debit card with a sales clerk as I have had problems with this in the past.
I understand that they want this as security in case anything goes wrong, but I would rather leave some other valuable. Do you happen to have a list of all the suppliers to will allow me to pay in cash to save phoning round everyone?
Thank for you help

Re: can you pay in cash?
Unfortunately it isn’t possible to hire a car completely without a credit or debit card. Some suppliers may let you pay in cash at the end of the rental if no damage has been done, but as this is not their preferred method, there is no list available to say which may allow this. The credit or debit card is required in case there is any damage done to the vehicle, but you will not have to physically leave your debit card behind – the details will just be held on file in case there are any problems.
So while cash may be an option for payment at the end of a rental, it is only if there is no damage done to the vehicle and after a credit or debit card have been provided upon collecting the vehicle.
I hope this answers your query.
Thank you.

Re: can you pay in cash?
That's good to know, thanks for your help.
Sorry to be a pain, but if I have to have a card I have another question: Is it possible to you a card belonging to a friend or family member? I think I may be able to use my friend's card, but her surname is different to mine. If it has to be the same surname, it might be possible to use my dad's credit card.
Would this be acceptable?

It is possible to pay in cash for car rent. It is not preferable so much. Mostly a credit or debit card is used to pay.
